Nyboe is celebrating his 20th anniversary as a DJ

06/10/2025

The anniversary is celebrated with a limited all-vinyl mixtape on cassette tape in 20 copies and four special vinyl sets in Copenhagen and Aarhus with only hip hop he would have played or listened to in his early years as a DJ - as well as three specials of his radio show WaxWorks w/ Nyboe.

October 14, 2005, Nyboe played what he considers for the first time officially as a DJ - or at least his first time as a DJ at a hip hop jam with two turntables and a mixer. There had been several years where the music had been directed or curated by Nyboe, but for him you were only a DJ when you played at a hip hop jams with two turntables, a mixer and a pile of vinyl!

The first gig took place in Nykøbing Mors at Total Undergrund after people had tried to book him to play again. But when you grew up in Aarhus and saw some of the best DJs in the country and the world behind the turntables every week, you had to build up enough confidence in your own abilities before you dared to take the plunge.

At first, Nyboe played with his friend René - at that time known as Narko Mad Man and later as Analyse - and when he stopped DJ'ing a few years later, he played a few years with O-Jay before Nyboe finally overcame his stage fright and anxiety and went solo.

This led to a period of considerable success, both as a warm-up act and DJ for a number of international and Danish rappers and a period as a sought-after nightclub-DJ. But in 2012, the unthinkable happened - he suffered a serious neck injury that took several years of rehabilitation and left him in constant pain.

It took around three years before Nyboe got back on his feet and behind the turntable and it was especially kicked off by going on tour with Kejser A and Binær, where he won an international mixtape competition at Reloop with a set he recorded live at Lille Vega in 2015.

This gave Nyboe some new motivation. Several more live mixes were recorded and he played at a number of jams and parties, but in 2020 the unthinkable happened - again! His neck collapsed once more - two years of increased pain hell, long rehabilitation and a break from playing as a DJ followed. But after a two-year break, he got back to work. This time more focused, but also more careful and with a focus on not playing more than his body allows.

Since then, he has won several mixtape competitions, among others WaxPoetics & Polaroid and Reloop and made mixtapes and live-streamed sets for labels, brands and radio stations in, among others, Canada, Australia, the USA, France, England and Scandinavia and warmed up for several prominent American rappers such as The Alchemist & Boldy James, Masta Ace, CRIMEAPLE, XP The Marxman, Guilty Simpson, El Da Sensei and many more.

He has also gone back to focusing more on playing only pure vinyl and at the same time delving more into the things he has always loved, but didn't feel there was an opportunity to play to the same extent until now - jazz-funk, library music, world music, rare grooves, samples, breaks and so on.

On the occasion of Nyboe's 20th anniversary as a DJ, he is going back to his roots and playing four special vinyl sets with hip hop he would have played or listened to in his first years as a DJ, in Copenhagen and Aarhus between October 10th and 18th.

In addition, he is releasing a limited all-vinyl mixtape on cassette with the same selection of hip hop, which will have the official release party on October 15th for the third event at Mesteren & Lærlingen. This mix will also be broadcast as a special episode of Nyboe's radio show WaxWorks on Black Rhino Radio in Romania and around the world already now.
